A welcome from the head teacher
Welcome and thank you for visiting the West Monkton Church of England Primary School website.
West Monkton is a thriving and growing school now located at the heart of the community between the old Monkton Heathfield and the new housing developments. We are very used to welcoming new pupils during the academic year, with nearly 100 pupils arriving as in year applications in the last two years. Our experience ensures that children settle very quickly and soon feel a part of our happy school.
We feel very proud and privileged to be the ‘tenants’ of a brand new school building. The design of the new build gave us a great opportunity to consider what kind of learning environment we wanted. The results we are really pleased with and support our vision of an outstanding environment in which everyone has the courage and confidence to fly. As you walk around the building you will get a sense of the positive, purposeful and calm atmosphere in every space.
We are extremely proud of our school. Governors, staff, parents and children work together to create a happy, secure and fulfilling environment for all. In June 2014 West Monkton was judged Good at our latest Ofsted inspection and we work hard to maintain high expectations and good progress throughout this period of rapid growth and change.
We are committed, as a Church of England School, to our Christian foundation with Christian Values at the heart of everything we do. We work hard every day to ensure all of our children have a clear sense of moral purpose. This was reflected in the school’s Outstanding judgement in December 2014 through our latest Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools.
Christian Values are reflected through our curriculum themes and weekly foci of Collective Worship. The values that we are focusing on during this academic year are:
Autumn Term – Friendship and Hope
Spring term – Creation
Summer Term – Wisdom and Love
We always look at ways to enhance our curriculum through local links, such as strong links with St Augustine’s, Taunton Museum, Farmlinks and Tacchi Morris.
We believe in being a truly inclusive school; our aim is for every child to achieve their potential whatever their starting point. A dedicated inclusions team work with teachers and support stall to plan to meet the needs of every individual. At times it may take time to ensure that we always have the right individual support; however we always look to work in partnership with parents to achieve the most successful outcome together.
We believe that children learn best when home and school work together and we encourage parents to be actively involved in those areas of school and learning that directly affect their child and also the wider life of the school.
We are really pleased to be able to offer our own Nursery provision, Little Herons Nursery, which opened this January and is already running very successfully and proving very popular. The decision to open a nursery as part of the school means that we can ensure the same principles and high expectations for every child can begin, for local children, from the earliest age.
You can find out more about our school by exploring the pages of our website and of course we are always happy for new parents to arrange a visit so that they can come and see for themselves.
